Cremation headstones UK: choosing a memorial for an ashes plot

A cremation headstone is a stone memorial for a plot where ashes are interred, or for a memorial garden space the crematorium controls. It is often smaller than a headstone for a full burial. The search phrases people use, “cremation headstones”, “cremation memorials” and “headstones for cremation plots”, all point at the same decision: what will this burial authority actually allow on this section?

We do not treat a burial lawn headstone as interchangeable with an ashes memorial.

Start with the location, not the granite colour

Crematoria and cemeteries restrict height, material, vase holes, kerbs and ornamentation, sometimes by garden or lawn section. A design that is welcome in one memorial garden can be refused fifty metres away. Tell us where the ashes are, or will be, interred, and the plot or section if you have it. We then help compare granite colours and shapes, set out the inscription, and support the memorial application. Every final design remains subject to the burial authority’s approval.

Planning for two names

Many ashes plots are intended for two interments. Where the stone and the rules allow it, we can plan the first inscription so space remains for a second name. That is easier than squeezing a later line onto a tablet that was filled on day one. The plot rights still apply: having space on the stone does not create a right that the deed does not give.

Vases, photos and lettering

A granite vase or photo plaque can be considered where the authority permits them. Do not assume a vase hole or a ceramic photograph is allowed because you have seen one on another plot. Lettering is cut, sandblasted, gilded or enamelled to suit the stone; we send a proof before work starts. Wording ideas live in the inscription library.

Cost and time, without a false starting price

Price moves with size, granite, inscription, artwork, fixing and the local permit fee. Collection prices are a starting point, not the finished quotation. Lead time depends on whether the memorial is UK stock or made to order, plus approval. We confirm the expected timeframe in writing. Payment is a 50% deposit plus any cemetery or churchyard fee we are arranging, with the balance before fitting. We do not offer instalment plans.
