If you are researching gravestone prices in the UK, the honest answer is that the memorial industry quotes on specification, not a single menu price, because every grave and every burial ground is different.
Our main buying a gravestone guide links to live ranges and types of gravestones available. This page focuses on numbers: what moves the quote, what to ask other suppliers, and where cutting price often creates problems later.
Remember that many burial grounds charge a separate memorial or permit fee that is not part of your mason's quotation. Those charges sit with the cemetery or church and vary by site, see our cemetery regulations overview and permission for a gravestone in the UK.
Headstone prices by memorial type (guide ranges)
Figures are indicative UK guide ranges for new granite memorials; final quotes depend on cemetery section, size, colour and inscription. Cemetery permit fees are separate.
| Memorial type | Typical guide range | What affects the price |
|---|---|---|
| Cremation tablet / small plaque | Lower range | Compact size, simpler fixing |
| Lawn headstone | Mid range | Height, granite colour, inscription length |
| Kerb memorial / full surround | Higher range | Stone area, chippings, vases, borders |
| Bespoke carving / photo plaque | Add-on | Artwork, ceramics, extra workshop time |
Payment terms
We do not offer instalment plans. Standard terms are a 50% deposit plus any cemetery fee when you place the order, with the balance before installation. Your written quotation lists both amounts and expected milestones.
What drives gravestone and headstone prices?
- Stone area and thickness: larger upright memorials and full grave memorials (kerb sets) use more granite and labour than compact lawn stones or cremation tablets.
- Granite colour: common greys are often more economical than rare blacks or blues. See our materials guide.
- Lettering and layout: gilded or enamel inscriptions, long verses, languages and fine detail take additional workshop time.
- Features: carved books, portraits, photo plaques and vases add cost but also meaning.
- Installation and compliance: foundations, ground anchors and paperwork must match the cemetery. A price that omits fixing or approval support is not comparable.
